Indianapolis Colts Strengthen Secondary with Key Roster Moves

The Indianapolis Colts have officially bolstered their cornerback lineup by signing veterans Tre Herndon and Duke Shelley, the team announced. In corresponding moves, the Colts have placed cornerback David Long Jr. on the Injured Reserve list and released tight end Albert Okwuegbunam Jr.

Veteran CB Help Comes In

Tre Herndon, who entered the league in 2018 as an undrafted free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars, brings valuable experience to Indianapolis. Herndon has played in 83 games, including 34 starts, during his time in the NFL. Known for his versatility and consistent play in the secondary, he provides the Colts with much-needed depth and leadership.

Joining him is Duke Shelley, a 2019 sixth-round pick by the Chicago Bears. Shelley has made stops with the Minnesota Vikings, Las Vegas Raiders, and Los Angeles Rams. Over his career, he’s shown strong man coverage skills and the ability to contribute on special teams.

David Long Jr. Moved to Injured Reserve

To accommodate the new additions, cornerback David Long Jr. has been placed on Injured Reserve. Long signed with the Colts earlier this year but will now be sidelined indefinitely due to injury.

Tight End Albert Okwuegbunam Jr. Released

The team also announced the release of tight end Albert Okwuegbunam Jr., who had signed with Indianapolis earlier in the offseason. Okwuegbunam, a former fourth-round pick by the Denver Broncos, was expected to compete for a spot in a crowded tight end room.

Looking Ahead

These roster adjustments signal the Colts’ intent to shore up their defensive backfield as training camp progresses and preseason games approach. Both Herndon and Shelley bring starting experience and could play crucial roles depending on health and performance in the coming weeks.
