Terry McLaurin misses Commanders training camp as contract negotiations stall

Washington Commanders star receiver Terry McLaurin has officially missed the team’s first training camp session as contract negotiations between him and the franchise remain unresolved.

The team placed McLaurin on the Reserve/Not Reported list after failing to show up for the mandatory conditioning test on July 22. This absence marks a significant step in what appears to be a denial of a new contract.

McLaurin is entering the final season of a three year contract extension he signed in 2022, worth approximately $68 million. Despite his consistently elite performance, he is reportedly unhappy with the financial terms of the final year, which include approximately $2.8 million in guaranteed money, far less than what many top receivers currently earn.

His absence could cost him up to $50,000 in fines for each day missed, in addition to the penalties for missing the previous minicamp.

Last season, McLaurin was once again a standout performer:

82 receptions

1,096 receiving yards

13 touchdowns

These numbers helped him earn Second-Team All Pro honors and extend his streak of 1,000 plus yard seasons to five, a rare consistency in the NFL.

Commanders general manager Adam Peters acknowledged the situation, calling it normal in the NFL. He added that the team holds McLaurin in high regard and is actively working to find a solution.

Head coach Dan Quinn sounded a similar note, highlighting McLaurin’s leadership and impact on the team.

It’s unknown how long the suspension will last, but some experts suggest McLaurin could eventually report and participate in non contact drills a tactic known as “hold-in” to avoid further fines while behind-the-scenes negotiations continue.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels expressed his support for McLaurin and told reporters he believes the chemistry between them will remain strong when his receiver returns.

McLaurin’s contract impasse is another example of elite wide receivers seeking fairer compensation in a changing NFL landscape. With the regular season fast approaching, Washington will be eager to resolve the situation quickly and ensure its offense remains at its peak.
